I like Rob Bell. I enjoyed “Love Wins” and I appreciate his pastoral heart and the way he brings theology into everyday discourse.
If you have not seen the trailer for his new book, catch it HERE.
Rob is right in his basic thesis: we made Yahweh into a tribal God, a wrathful judge on the one hand, and a cosmic Santa-Claus on the other. The truth is neither of these. I am particularly glad for Rob and others who are arguing that excluding an entire gender from freedom in Christ — full equality in family, ministry and mission — is offensive to the gospel. What we made into deal-breakers, in the name of marking clear boundaries as to who is in and who is out, Yahweh probably found offensive. Worse, it made it difficult to be intellectually honest, which became a barrier both inside our fellowships and also for those who otherwise were searching.
