Advent Conspiracy.. and Amnesty

Posted in gospel, justice at 3:10 pm by len

adventThe Advent Conspiracy looks fantastic. It may seem a small thing, but it’s these simple, ordinary efforts that add up to create something larger. From the website:

The story of Christ’s birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love.

So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists.

And when it’s all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas?

What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?

Unrelated, Amnesty International’s Global Write-a-thon is coming up quickly. While we give a small monthly gift to this group, it’s far more important to get involved and actually do something. Last year we participated, and we’ll choose something again this year. The write-a-thon begins December 5th and carries to the 14th, with International Human Rights day in the middle on Dec. 10. Make a difference for justice and peace. Do something.

    Hi Len,
I’m a friend of Dan Steigerwald (a friend of yours, right?). I am also a pastor at Imago Dei in Portland, one of the original co-conspirators of Advent. This thing has literally redeemed Christmas for our church and my family specifically, transforming us in needed and profound ways. For a little irreverent humor along similar lines you should check out the Morgan Spurlock film “What Would Jesus Buy?”. Last December Mr. Spurlock paid us a visit for an on stage interview. Good times.
